Split bad OCR, permissions, network, and crashes
“Photo translate failed” in search usually means four different things. Bad OCR: text appears, but with wrong characters, missing lines, or mixed languages. Permission block: immediate “cannot access camera” or a black viewfinder. Network failure: framing works, then spin, timeout, or connection errors. Crash: entering photo mode kills the app — that is not an OCR problem.
Before changing settings, note OS and Youdao version, whether you get “no text” versus “wrong text,” and whether a VPN or corporate proxy is on. Same image fails, other images work → shooting conditions. Every image times out → network. Camera never opens → permissions.

Lighting, focus, and distance when OCR is wrong
Youdao photo translate needs clear character edges. Side light, neon, and glass glare wash strokes out; tiny type or handshake blur tanks accuracy. Fill the frame with the target text: one menu column at a time, or step closer until signage fills at least half the viewfinder.
Focus before you shoot — tap to focus and wait for sharpness. Curved pages and wrinkled packaging warp a single line; flatten the surface or import a flat photo from the gallery. Handwriting, stylized fonts, and vertical classical layouts are harder than print; crop and enlarge in Photos first, then recognize.

Camera and Photos permission denied
Android: Settings → Apps → Youdao → Permissions — set Camera to Allow; enable storage/photos if you pick from the gallery. Some OEM skins kill the process mid-capture after “battery optimization,” which feels like a broken feature. After changing permissions, swipe the app away and reopen.
iOS: Settings → Youdao → enable Camera (and Photos). If you once tapped Don’t Allow, the system won’t prompt again inside the app — you must flip it in Settings. Limited access that expired can suddenly block the lens; allow again and retry.
Permissions on but still black: another app may hold the camera (video call, scanner), or a device-wide privacy toggle disabled cameras. If it also crash-quits, switch to crash troubleshooting instead of looping on the permission screen.
Network and proxies: framing works, translation doesn’t
Online photo translate usually sends recognition to the server. When framing is fine but loading never finishes, disable VPN/intercepting proxies and compare cellular vs Wi‑Fi. Corporate HTTPS inspection can break translate requests while the camera preview still looks healthy — short text translate often fails at the same time, which means the lens is not the culprit.
On weak networks, save to Photos and import later when the signal is stable. If text translate works but photo mode alone fails, check for an outdated build on the download page rather than endless reshoots.
Login timeouts or site-wide connectivity issues belong with those checklists; don’t burn retries only on the camera module.
Screenshots, tables, and busy layouts
Multi-column menus, price lists, and stamped pages often glue two columns into nonsense. Crop to one column or one line, or enlarge a screenshot first. Long PDF pages belong in document translation, not a single photo sweep of the whole sheet.
Screen captures beat photographing a screen — less moiré. Chat-compressed images that turn into color blocks need a fresh screenshot or original. Stylized storefront fonts may still need you to fix one or two keywords by hand after OCR.
When to reinstall — and how to divert crashes
Reinstall when permissions and network are fine but photo mode whitescreens or crash-loops, or you know the package is incomplete/outdated. Flow: uninstall → reboot → grab the matching Android/iOS build from the download page → allow camera, then test one printed sample.
