Open Youdao Translate desktop app
Launch the desktop client. If you haven't installed it yet, download the desktop version here. Sign in if you need VIP quota.

Click the "Document Translation" tab at the top of the main interface, or drag your PDF directly onto the main window — the app will auto-detect it.

Upload your PDF
Click the upload area or drag the file in. File size, daily quota, and membership limits should be checked on the current upload screen before processing important PDFs.

Set source and target languages
Select the source language or auto-detect, then choose the target language. Exact language coverage should be checked in the current app.

Click Translate. A 100-page academic PDF typically takes 1–3 minutes. When done, switch between "Translation Only" and "Bilingual" view modes to check the results.

Native digital PDFs (text is selectable)
Academic papers, e-books, and digital contracts are usually this type — you can click and select text directly. These translate with the best quality and strong formatting retention. Use document translation directly.
Scanned PDFs (image-based)
Scanned paper documents can't be text-selected. Youdao runs OCR first to extract the text, then translates. Scan quality matters: 300 DPI or higher gives better OCR accuracy. For single pages, camera translation can also work well.
PDFs with equations or complex charts
Math formulas embedded as images are preserved unchanged — only surrounding text gets translated. LaTeX-format equations (text-based) will be translated. Chemical structures and scientific diagrams remain intact.
