When Youdao voice translate fails, branch by symptom: no waveform / “can’t use microphone” → check OS and in-app mic permission; waveform exists but blank or garbled text → noise, language pair, and weak uplink; subtitles appear but no playback → media volume, mute, and speaker ownership; endless spinner → disable proxies and retry a short phrase on stable network. For conversation/simultaneous how-to, see the voice translation guide; menu camera garbles → photo translate failed; PDF timeouts/blanks → document translate failed; tapping Voice crash-quits → crash / won’t open; webpage select-to-translate / extension silent → web extension fail.
At a hotel, a coworker ran Chinese–English dialogue. Three sentences in, the UI froze. He thought “Youdao voice translate is broken.” Turning off the captive-portal Wi‑Fi proxy and switching to a phone hotspot fixed it — one “hello” brought waveform and text back. Another phone that week had mic set to Never at the system level; pressing record in-app did nothing.
This page covers “I already use voice translate, but it fails.” It is not a menu-style intro. Install failures and launch crashes belong on the download page and the crash article.
Split silence, blank recognition, spinners, and crashes
“Voice translate failed” or “Youdao no sound” in search usually means four things. Silence: hold-to-talk shows no waveform, or the OS blocks the mic. Recognition failure: waveform exists, but results are blank, garbled, or half-missing. Spinner/timeout: after speaking, loading never ends, then a network error. Crash: entering Voice kills the app — that is not a mic or ASR problem.
Before changing settings, note OS and Youdao version, whether you get “no waveform” vs “waveform but no text,” and whether a VPN or corporate proxy is on. System recorder works, only Youdao is silent → permission. Timeouts on every network → proxy/weak uplink. Instant quit → leave this article.
Skim the FAQ for install/account notes. Offline dictionary download issues are a different thread — don’t fold them into one voice reinstall.
Microphone permission: OS and in-app
iOS: Settings → Youdao → Microphone → Allow. After a prior Don’t Allow, the in-app toggle can look fine while capture stays dead — flip the system switch, force-quit, reopen. Android: Settings → Apps → Youdao → Permissions → Microphone; “optimizer” tools often revoke it — restore Allow and turn off extreme battery limits for the app.
Desktop builds need OS mic access too. Windows: Privacy → Microphone → allow desktop apps. macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → check Youdao. Headsets or meeting apps can monopolize the input so Youdao gets a muted device — quit the occupant or switch input, then retest.
Still no waveform after granting access: record with the system app. If that fails, fix hardware/OS first. Don’t loop reinstalls while permission is still off.
Recognition fails: noise, language, and how you speak
Subways, open offices, and windy outdoors often yield blanks or garbage. Speak 20–30 cm from the mic, wait for quieter gaps, and use short sentences instead of long monologues. Collar-rubbing headset mics can show a waveform with wrong text — compare once with the built-in mic.
Reversed source/target languages look like “it is translating, but everything is wrong.” Lock the source language when auto-detect wobbles. Dialects, proper nouns, and overlapping speakers lower accuracy — that is a recognition boundary, not a “dead” engine.
Dialogue and simultaneous steps stay in the voice guide; here we only check after failure: prove a short quiet phrase works, then add noise and length back.
Subtitles without playback: volume, mute, ownership
Text appears but you hear nothing: check media volume (not ringer), mute/Focus modes, and whether a Bluetooth headset is connected but left in a bag. Navigation or video calls can own the speaker so Youdao “finishes” without audible output.
On desktop, confirm the output device isn’t a disconnected speaker; lid-closed laptop + external display sometimes routes audio to an empty sink. Switch back to the built-in speakers and tap playback again.
Readable subtitles mean the recognition path is mostly fine — fix audio routing before clearing cache or reinstalling. No subtitles at all → return to recognition and network, don’t only twist the volume knob.
Network and proxies: realtime voice needs uplink
Most realtime voice sends an audio stream to the server. When the bar freezes or you see network errors, disable VPN/intercepting proxies and compare cellular vs stable Wi‑Fi with one short phrase. Corporate HTTPS inspection can break streaming while short text translate still works — don’t misread that as a broken Voice module.
On weak networks, don’t mash the same failed session; wait for signal or switch to hotspot, then retry a short sentence. On desktop, check system proxy and security tools that quarantine upload traffic. If text and photo work but only voice times out, prioritize network and streaming over an immediate reinstall.
Login timeouts or site-wide connectivity issues belong with those checklists; don’t burn retries only on the voice session. More notes sit under the FAQ.
When to reinstall — and how to divert photo / document / crash
Reinstall when a short phrase works on another device but your install always has no waveform or whitescreens on Voice, or you know the package is incomplete/outdated. Flow: uninstall → reboot → grab the matching build from the download page → grant mic permission → say “test” once.
If the main UI won’t stay open, leave this article and use won’t open / crash. Paper menus misread → photo translate failed. PDF/Word timeouts → document translate failed. Webpage select-to-translate / extension dead → web extension fail. Need dialogue/simultaneous steps only → voice guide. After a clean install, silence or timeouts still point back to permission and network — stop the uninstall loop.
